Infant Baptism

Infant Baptism is for any child up to 2 years of age.

Once a child is walking, they may be tall enough to stand on a step and lower their head over the font. However for smaller sized, and/or younger children, they can be held over the font.

If the child is unhappy or uncomfortable being held by anyone else other than the parents or familiar adults, either the childs mother of father can hold them over the font.

Parents and Godparents will be ased to say the promises and vows on the child's behalf.

First step

Once we have received your enquiry, we will be in touch to arrange a time when we can meet with you and your child/children. It is our custom to come to your home, as we understand the challenges of having a very young child or toddler. Just let us know if you wish to meet us at the church.

We will then meet with you, to fill out all of the necessary details. It is beneficial if you can have, at this stage, chosen Godparents/Sponsors and have their details at hand (name, baptised/confirmed etc). It is a requirement that at least one parent has been baptised, and one Godparent has been baptised.

We welcome Sponsors of any faith or none. They must have a keen interest in the welfare of the child and be well known to you and your partner. They also must be willing to assist and encourage the child in their walk in the Christian faith.

The Day

Baptism is a rite which welcomes the child into the church family. Because of this, unless there are exceptional circumstances, our baptisms are held during our 9am Holy Communion services. We ask that you fully engage in the whole service, not just the Baptismal rite. The Baptism will take place straight after the Sermon.

You are welcome to invite anyone, who you would like to be there, especially people who will have some responsibility for assisting to bring up the child, or who will be there to support you as parents through the child's life and also for the child as they grow, providing them with support and advice. We appreciate some idea of how many people will attend, so that we can have seats out for everyone.

You are most welcome to stay for morning tea afterwards and we invite you to bring cake in celebration.

We do not ask for any payment, but if you so desire, a donation is greatly appreciated.

There will be during the service, an offertory, this is a plate that will come around. If you wish to give a donation, please have this in a separate envelope marked "baptism donation".

Second step

Meet with priest and Godparents/Sponsors

We then arrange a time to meet together, with the Godparents/Sponsors.

At this meeting, we walk through the Baptism Service booklet, with an explanation of what baptism is and why we say the words we do.

If any of the adults is FiFo, or lives overseas, we can arrange to meet via an online video call. We ask for you to coordinate this meeting, as you know the parties involved.

We are happy to have them join us in the baptism service online if they cannot be present, but it, of course, is desirable that they be physically present on the day.
